What is a word value calculator?

Score letters by alphabet position, a=1 through z=26, and “attitude” famously sums to 100. That is the whole trick behind this calculator: it shows each word’s value and a grand total, ignoring case, digits and punctuation. Teachers use it for the classic “find a 100-point word” challenge; puzzle setters use it for ciphers built on the A1Z26 scheme.

How to use the Word Value Calculator

  1. 1 List one or more words in the box.
  2. 2 Each word appears with its letter-sum beside it.
  3. 3 Check the grand total at the bottom for the full input.
  4. 4 Adjust spellings to chase a target number.

What you can use it for

  • Scoring words for a puzzle or classroom game.
  • Finding words that add up to a target number.
  • Exploring gematria-style letter sums.
  • Creating number-based word challenges.

Frequently asked questions

How is a word’s value worked out?
Each letter scores its alphabet position: a is 1, m is 13, z is 26. The word’s letters are summed, so “cab” is 3 + 1 + 2 = 6.
Are uppercase and lowercase treated the same?
Yes. “Cat” and “cat” both score 3 + 1 + 20 = 24. Digits, punctuation and spaces score nothing and are skipped.
What can I use word values for?
A1Z26 is one of the first ciphers puzzle hunts teach, and the “100-point word” hunt is a classroom staple. It also underpins gematria-style games with English text.
